History. . .

Located in the Cascade Mountains of Western Oregon, Breitenbush Hot Springs and the 67-acre ecological restoration project comprise the vast majority of an original 160 acre homestead granted by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904.

The homestead was later divided. The southern half of the property became a rustic resort and spa, passing through several owners before eventually falling into disrepair.

Alex Beamer purchased the property in 1977 to establish an intentional community devoted to holistic health and spiritual growth. Alex sold the land and business to the members of the community in 1984.

Today, Breitenbush Hot Springs is a worker-owned and managed cooperative, operating an internationally known retreat and conference center. The Breitenbush River and hot springs allow the community to use hydro-electric power and geothermal heat to meet its energy needs.

In 1999, friends, members and alumni of Breitenbush Hot Springs created the non-profit Breitenbush Eco Fund to extend our vision of holistic health and ecological stewardship to the greater community. You can support this important work by contributing to the Breitenbush Eco Fund.
